Happy Quilt Birthday to Me!

Did you post a comment or subscribe? Scroll to the bottom of this post to see if you are a winner!

No, not your birthday, it's my birthday. My Quilt Birthday, to be specific. I'm going to be 10 (in quilty years) on Friday, February 8, 2013!

As discussed on the very first page of my book, ScrapTherapy, Cut the Scraps!, on February 8, 2003 I took my first quilting class at the local quilt shop. I had so much fun, that right after class, I purchased the fabric 'ingredients' for my next two quilt projects.

That was several yards of fabric ago, at least three sewing machine upgrades (two in the first year!), two books (almost), and way too many finished quilt projects to count. What a ride!

And now, Friday, February 8, 2013 is my Quilt Birthday!

So I want to celebrate 10 years of quilting with a gift for you. But what should the gift be?

How about some fabric from my stash. Wait . . . I'm not sure I can bear to part with anything.

Maybe some scraps?

No, not the cut up stuff, the messy stuff . . . Hardly seems like much of a present if you've got to cut it up. Who needs more of a mess in their sewing room?

I still have these orphan blocks. . . . Seems wrong somehow to give away quilt blocks that I can't find a way to use.

What about a new pattern? This one is going to be fun, but the pattern isn't quite ready yet. More information on this one soon!

Or this one? . . . Nope just a tiny bit early for this one too, maybe another week and it'll be ready for its debut. It sure is pretty, though.

One of these? . . . No, no, no.

I have it. How about a book. ScrapTherapy, Cut the Scraps! A good idea, but many of you might already have it!

THIS IS IT! The New book! It's not in shops yet. I don't have it yet. It's not on my website yet. But the winner will get a copy of the new book, ScrapTherapy, Scraps Plus One! to be shipped as soon as my first copies arrive, most likely in April.

Wouldn't that be cool? And so, it's decided.

Here's how you can win a copy of ScrapTherapy, Scraps Plus One! Truly hot off the press!

You have TWO options to enter . . .

1) Post a comment on this blog entry. Answer the question, when is your quilt birthday? If you are a quilter-wanna-be, offer a future date. Or just say "I wanna win!" Just post a comment. Be sure to include your email address, so I can contact you if you are the lucky duck.

2) Or subscribe to "Good Migrations" weekly eZine - Look for the space to add your email address toward the top of the sidebar on the right-hand side of any page of the Hummingbird Highway website. If you are already a subscriber, see item number 1, if you have a friend who might enjoy this weekly publication, invite them to subscribe. Anyone who subscribes on February 8, 2013, is in it to win it! Plus, you get a free pattern, just for subscribing. How can you lose?

That's it. Simple, right?

BUT, there's a catch. You only have ONE DAY TO ENTER - February 8, 2013 from midnight to midnight, East Coast time (US) - the 24 hours that represent my 10th Quilt Birthday.

So, subscribe or comment any time on February 8, 2013 (midnight to midnight, east coast time). One winner will be randomly chosen to receive ScrapTherapy, Scraps Plus One!

Tell your quilty friends, and spread the word!

Happy Quilt Birthday! Good luck!

Joan

UPDATE: Oh my goodness! I am SO glad that I decided in advance of my post that the winning entry was selected by a random number generator. Your comments floored me! I have read every single comment, and I so appreciate all the kind words and thoughtful reminiscences.

Now for the winner! Actually, you put me in such a good mood that I decided to pick TWO! Between new subscribers, commenters, and technically challenged well-wishers (I try not to ask why these things sometimes don't work, I just try to figure out a quick fix), almost 130 responses were received to my 10th Quilt Birthday post.

The two winners are
   Janice M. of Galesburg, Iowa
Lynn D. of North Syracuse, NY

Please contact me by email at info@hummingbird-highway.com with an address, so I can send you a book, ScrapTherapy, Scraps Plus One! as soon as I receive my first copies from the publisher in about 8-10 weeks.

Congratulations! And Happy Quilt Birthday to all . . . !

  2. good morning. I definitely can't remember my quilt birthday, it was 'so' many years ago, in Hawaii. But I celebrate everyday with a bit of stitching everyday. So can everyday be my birthday??

  3. Happy Quilt Birthday. Mine was last month, January 28, 2003. I got a catalog in the mail with all these beautiful quiilts that you could buy. But after seeing what one of the quilts cost, I had my quilting "ah ha" moment. Instead of buying a quilt why don't I just make my own quilt. With not a clue on how to make a quilt I went our local shop bought fabric and my first quilt book. A few "oops" along the way but here I am10 years later neck deep in my fabric stash, a floor to ceiling bookcase full of wonderful quilt books and a box of show ribbons from my winning entries. Now I just need 100 years to make all the quilts I have in my head and to use up part of my stash of fabric. So happy I found this thing they call "quilting".

  12. Happy Quilt Birthday. Mine is 2/12/2002. The reason I can remember it is because that is the day I began my first quilting class at the local high school. It was one of their adult education classes. I still have all the directions & class sheets from it. We made a Double Irish Chain.

I WANNA WIN your lovely new book!

  14. Happy Quilt Birthday, Joan! My quilt b-day is 1988. I was "in the field" in New Mexico conducting plant ecology studies in the northern Chihuahuan Desert. My mom rescued me from the field, She took me directly the quilt store in Albuquerque. On that hot, mid- July, desert day, we started quilting with intent! It's been fun to swap swatches and stash fabrics and finished quilts over the years. What a pleasure to be a part of the flow of fabric, color, design and creation. I can't wait to use your new book. I treasure the first one!

  19. I want to win! My quilty Birthday....well that's hard to tell. I started quilting with my mother when I was in grade school/Jr. high stopped, started again in my 20's , stopped and started again last year. So I guess I have 3 BD's but the most important one is this coming spring when it will have been 1 year since I returned to something I love. Now that I'm retired I have the time and finally the patience to really work at learning more and enjoying it.

  26. Hi Joan Happy Quilt birthday to you. It is very nice of you to be sharing your quilt Birthday with us. I started quilting on Nov. 9th, 1992. The reason I know this is because my daughter was born on Nov. 9th in "79" and that is my husband and my anniversary which was in the year 1974. We both wanted a sewing machine. My daughter wanted one to start making her own clothes and I wanted one to start quilting. We both bought fabric that day and started our projects and both have been going strong since then. It was a nice memory to share with you. Enjoy your day!

  27. Happy Quilt Birthday! I am not sure of the exact date but I was Summer of 1971.I was 12 and complaining that I was bored. My mother said "why don't you clean up the sewing room". So I sorted through all the sewing scraps from my older sister's 60's outfits. I made myself a 6 inch cardboard template, traced and cut, traced and cut, traced and cut...2 days later I had a top with all that 60's goodness. It has 1 inch seams but at least they match! Someday I will take it apart and make a lap quilt for each of my children.

  33. Yay for quilt birthdays! I also learned at a young age so I do not have a specific Q-day. My very first project was a rail fence pillow sham in shades of lavender and blue... pillow sham? who actually uses pillow shams? I never did because I never finished the project. Thanks for your wonderful book. I look forward to the next one =)

  34. Wow, can't wait to see the new book! I was amused to read your scroll through the options for the give-away, I had the same thoughts as you! So what better way to use the scraps than ANOTHER scrappy quilt. I have scrappy in my DNA, my mom was a masterful scrappy quilter and that's what I love best too. Always have a leader-ender project at the side of the machine, working towards another scrappy top.

Happy Birthday Friend....even though we have never met I feel like your girlfriend from Facebook. I started quilting in the fall of 1984. My first quilt was a baby quilt for my second child. Ultrasounds were never revealed as to gender back then. I designed my own pattern on graph paper. It was made in pastel yellow swiss dots and a yellow rosebud flower print and backed with yellow Flannelette. I still have her baby quilt... measured the blocks and they are 9 3/4" square. Who knew? I can rest assure I used a 5/8" seam allowance too...as that is what I was taught in 4-H Sewing Clubs and Home Ec. in High School. I didn't know how to do a binding so I just sewed the top and back together, turned it inside out and whipped stitched the edges closed. My daughter Sarah (whose birthday is tomorrow) was born on Feb 9, 1985.It's not quite as yellow as it was used but very loved by that little girl who is now 28. I have borrowed your 1st book from the local library several time and have an autographed copy bought at the Port Perry Quilt Guild meeting where you spoke last fall in Ontario. Sue C. still has it as I have not made to trip to Uxbridge to get it yet in this snowy winter weather. I would love to win your next book... but no worries as I am big fan of your scrappy style and will buy it also. Thanks Joan for being my Quilting Friend. Some day we will meet and have coffee with a hug. Love Karen xoxo

  47. This entry from Robin Brand who was having some 'technical difficulties'

Happy Quilty Birthday! My first quilt was done at 16 yrs old, and with absolutely no training.. My boyfriend slept in a very cold attic bedroom and I made I'm a quilt all from scrap clothing around the house and filled it with 3 old blankets to keep him warm. The quilt must have worked, we celebrate our 39th wedding anniversary in May. Now we sleep under a much nicer quilt, though.

  49. Happy Q Birthday Joan! Wow, you must be a quick study. Your work was already perfection when I first met you. ;-) As you know, I'm not a quilter however, does, fabric and quilt designer count? If so, my Q birthday is Spring 2003 when HHA first made it's debut in Pittsburgh. Close enough? Congratulations Joan, on your quilting ride! Can't wait to see the new book.

I began quilting August,2002, just before retirement. Had never sewn before and after purchasing all the material and pattern for my first quilt (which is now on my bed) I was told I needed a sewing machine!! Who knew! Countless quilts later, I am still learning and loving every minute of it.

He was born on July 16, 1984 so that was about 29 years ago. I have made many more quilts and quilty projects since then and am not cross stitching any more, but often think of picking up a small project or two again one of these days. 73. Happy Quilt Birthday to you! I never thought of celebrating a quilt birthday until you wrote about it. But it should be celebrated! We especially should especially celebrate the resulting friendships.

I can only remember my quilt birth month - October 1984 when I took my first quilting class. It was a very traditional quilting class - no sewing machines allowed, we hand pieced, so the few blocks I finished made their way into pillows.

  76. I started quilting and piecing with my Grandmother when I was a child and the first sewing machine I used was my Grandmothers Singer Treadle machine in 1965. Back then each piece was cut out by hand with scissors. My goodness have things come a long way since then. I have not stopped quilting since. My quilt birthday would be in April (don't know the day). The first thing I made was a doll quilt for my sister's birthday which is April 24th so figure it had to be a week or so before her birthday. I look forward to meeting you Quilt Port Retreat when you visit. I love your first book and am excited to get your new book when it is available.

  84. Happy Quilty Birthday from the Oregon Coast!!! I don't have a bench-mark date for when I did my first quilting ... but, I enjoy being a daughter of depression-era-parents and making something out of "nothing" ... those scraps. (Also, ... with no storm on the westcoast, for a change, I'm feeling lucky enough to win your NEW book: ScrapThearpy, Scraps Plus One!)

  92. Happy quilting birthday. I would love to win your new book. I find time everyday to quilt and/or sew. I have a three year old granddaughter in July, I have three great granddaughters, two great grandsons and one new additional greatgrand in July, sex not known. I have made them at least a quilt a year, but still find time to make quilts for my local charitable organization: GEORGIA QUILT FOR KIDS, and I also sew little dresses for Africa. I began quilting in 1976, and I don't think a day goes by without me sewing, cutting, quilting, designing and mailing off quilts. My local post office knows me by site and content of package, Another quilt lady today are the contents? Answer always the same: Yep! So I'd love to win to gain some new inspirations. Good luck to all who entered and be blessed.

  98. Happy Quilty Birthday Joan! Mine is the fall of 2008 (for quilting anyhow) when my sister Janet invited me to join a Block of the Month at the Village Sampler in Big Flats, NY. Since then I've gone hog wild! I love to sew, quilt, Free Motion Quilt and share with others that enjoy the same. Since that kickoff I've taken classes from some very talented ladies locally including Sharon Stroud and Debbie Wick.

Thanks for the great giveaway and congrats again -- how exciting that after only a few years of quilting you're publishing monthly patterns and publishing books! Good for you!
    Hugs,
    Karen

  100. Happy Quilty Birthday X 10, Joan! Although I've been quilting for over 30 years, I don't think I'll catch up to the number of quilts you've made! I think of you every time I bind a quilt and am reminded of your binding tips I learned from you in Fayetteville! Congratulations on your 10 years of successful quilting and publishing!

  104. Happy 10th Quilting Birthday. I pieced my FIRST quilt in 2012, for my cousin who begged me to make a quilt for her. After the quilt, I made a quilted pillowcase and a quilted bag to match the quilt. Before I shipped it to her, I showed it to all my classes (I am a substitute teacher) to encourage my students to always TRY. Now instead of only admiring quilts and collecting fabric and patterns, I am making quilts!!! I am hooked!!! I love the quilt on the cover of your 2nd book! I would LOVE to win that book. Thank you for the wonderful ideas!! -Stephanie M.

  106. Darn, I didn't see this in time to enter, but have to tell you I've turned many people onto your Cut The Scraps book. I wrote a review for our quilt guild newsletter and have started a Scrap Pack group to study, learn and use our scraps. I'll be ordering this book as soon as it's available.
